Setting up a CNAME record for each of the domains or subdomains you've got in a hosting account allows you to forward it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain will lose all of its records - A, MX etc, and will take the records of the Internet domain it is being pointed to. In this light, you cannot set up a CNAME record to point your domain name to a third-party company and maintain a working e-mail service with the first hosting company. Additionally, it is important to note that a CNAME record is always a string of words rather than a number as it's commonly mistaken for the A record of the domain name being redirected. One of the major uses of a CNAME record is to point a domain name that you own through one provider to the servers of another company assuming you have created a website with the latter. That way, the site will appear under your own domain, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party company.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with each of our semi-dedicated server accounts, allows you to create a CNAME record with ease. In case you want to create a private URL for your emails, to redirect a domain to a subdomain in the account or to forward a domain to another provider and use some third-party service which they provide, it's not going to take you more than 3 clicks to set up this sort of record. All DNS records for the domain addresses and subdomains hosted within the semi-dedicated account are going to be listed in a separate section in the CP, so when you're there, all that you will have to do will be to select the type of the record that you want to create and the hostname for which you are creating it, and then enter the actual record text. For your convenience, you can watch a short video inside the CP on how to create a CNAME record or you can refer to the instructions in the help article, that's available in the DNS records section.
